"See others as people and not as achievements or failures" - Alicia Sjöström
Alicia is an artist and photographer living in Stockholm. She sees art as a sanctuary where she can do what she wants, and doesn't have to fit into an already moulded form. She grew up with a dark room in the basement and was introduced to photography early by her father. What drives her is the joy of capturing something beautiful, without disturbing it, therefore her photos are naked and stripped down, with no underlying values weighing down.
At DAC, she shares a series of photos taken in Sri Lanka that challenge our ideas of identity and value.
She was fascinated by the openness of Sri Lanka and felt that she was getting close to people the first time they met. Many introduced themselves by telling about their family history and invited her to their home and offered food. She started to think about how she lives her life. What does she value in life?
Imagine if we can live the life we want to live and not the life we think is expected of us.
